Real leadership comes from the heart. It comes from the soul. It comes from who you are on the inside, not who you are on the outside. That real leadership is when you care about the people you’re serving more than you care about yourself. Real leadership is the ability to take a stand and take an unpopular position sometimes.
A lot of people sometimes act like—well, particularly the people that I think are like the least leaders, usually politicians—it’s all about “what does the latest poll say I should do?” Leadership doesn’t necessarily mean going with what the polls say. Sometimes you’ve got to convince people there’s a better place they need to be. Sometimes you’ve got to take a stand that may be going a little bit against the grain of what’s going on. Just because everybody thinks something is a great idea, in all honesty, sometimes it might not be the direction things need to go. Real leadership is about courage. Real leadership is about conviction. Real leadership is about caring about people more than you care about yourself.
