Today, I have a story to share with you from my “Share Your Story” campaign that comes from a bit of a celebrity in the world of overcoming.
Hykie Berg has been from the lowest of valleys to the tallest of peaks, and faced the greatest of fears along the way. He’s here to share his story with us.
“With the help of God, I overcame heroin addiction. It took nine treatment facilities to find lasting sobriety. Today, I have been clean for 17 years.”
I believe addiction must be one of the most harrowing experiences anyone can overcome. I am so proud of you for not giving up before you found lasting recovery. Reaching out for help not once, but as many times as it takes, is truly an act of bravery. I have heard that overcoming any addiction is a day-by-day battle, so I am in awe of everything you have achieved.
“I am an award-winning actor in South Africa; I have written three books, two of which were bestsellers; and I won Survivor South Africa: Maldives and was awarded a million rand. I was also a Bronze Presidential director in Mannatech, a Network Marketing company, and am now free from the rat race. I’m married to a beautiful, God-fearing woman and we have a little baby girl called Lemeh.
I am a motivational speaker and am involved with an NGO called Hope Again, a treatment facility helping addicts and alcoholics find sobriety. I am truly blessed and am an overcomer in Jesus Christ!”
A wise person once told me that they could only keep what they had by giving it away. I can see that philosophy in action through your words. How amazing that you have taken the blessings in your own life and turned around to extend a hand to those coming behind you. It seems to me that only someone who has walked through the daily fear of overcoming addiction could truly understand and best help someone else who faces such a steep challenge.
Reflection
Hykie’s story is a powerful reminder of what it means to face fear with courage and persistence. Recovery is never simple, and those who walk that road show extraordinary strength and resilience. Hykie’s daily choice to confront addiction (and to keep choosing faith and hope over fear) offers an inspiring example to all of us of what true perseverance looks like.
From Hykie’s story, we can learn:
- Sometimes we have to have faith in something greater than ourselves to succeed.
- There’s no shame in asking for the help you need.
- Offering a helping hand to those who come behind you gives you a chance to share what you’ve learned, thereby solidifying your learning while being of service.
To Hykie: Thank you for your honesty, bravery, and your generosity toward fellow addicts in recovery and your fellow man in general. It’s people like you who help folks find their way to the top!
