What do you feel like when you engage in your favorite hobby?
Is it relaxing? Invigorating? Calming? Adrenaline pumping?

Aside from reading, gardening is my go-to. I love spending time in the garden. It is calming and relaxing for me.

What do I love most about it, you ask? Gardening is just like leadership: what you put into it is what you get out of it...except one time when the boys and I plowed an entire field and planted corn. We left it beautifully organized rows of dark, heaping earth, ready to sprout the world's tallest, prettiest corn stalks. We came back to weeds the size of Volkswagons. We had cultivated, but what we cultivated was not what we wanted. Sometimes that happens. Not fun, but that's life.🌽

Every interaction, every human moment, every decision, every choice...it all creates something. When I am engaged in mindful gardening and mindful leadership, when I exude positivity in my interactions, THAT is when my yield best reflects my input. We have to mind our input; It's the difference between creating beautiful things that serve others and destructive things that demolish hard work and effort.

I am currently writing a book about fear and how we can use it to change our lives for the better. But it's not an easy book to write. As soon as I finish a page, there the lessons are right in front of me, asking me if I can practice what I preach.

I don't know if we ever fail in relation to fear, but I do think we always learn from it, or rather, we CAN learn from it.

How easy is it to deter you from a goal?

When you are working toward something you feel passionate about and encounter resistance or fear, how easily do you give up and quit?

Are you like a bull, seeing your target and pursuing it directly and unwaveringly?
Are you like a turtle, retracting into your shell as you go blind to the rest of the world?
Are you like a dolphin, getting creative as you problem-solve?
Are you like a bat who cannot see a "problem" but who perceives obstacles so you find a way around it?

One critical question that will help you when you think about this is, "Are there problems, or are there opportunities to get creative, increase my steadfastness and perseverance, and expand my mental capacities to create workaround solutions?"

Sometimes, it's all in how you perceive it. One simple shift in mentality can make all the difference in the world when it comes to approaching and overcoming fear and other challenges.
